Underwater World

Saturday night, after spending the entire afternoon on the Scuba Roo, we headed back out to "Underwater World". This tourist attraction is located down by the tourist hotel district. This was an absolutely AWESOME experience! If you are traveling on a budget, this is one attraction you simply MUST budget to see, because you will never see anything like this again.

Basically, this is an "aquarium" attraction, featuring Guam sealife, but with a twist! So don't start yawning! You walk THROUGH the aquarium in a long, snake-like, underwater "tunnel". So the fish swim around and above you! There is a snapshot here in which you can see the tunnel is 2.5 inches thick!

Cameras are normally not allowed, but for our blog, the staff kindly told us we could take just a few, as the flash upsets the fish.

They provide a "digital audio guide". At each new turn, there is a number located on a placard by the exhibit. You can type in the number into the audio guide, and listen to a voice explain what you are looking at. You can see Werner holding the "audio guide" in a photo above. At the end of the tour, there is a nice octopus, where you hang up your audio guide unit for the staff to retrieve.

The staff informed me that it is much less crowded in the evenings, about an hour before closing. This is when we went, and we were virtually alone in the tunnel most of the time.

Many of the fish will "rest" on the top of the tunnel, directly over your head. This was of particular interest with the manta rays and the sharks, as it is probably the only time one would EVER observe the belly/mouths of either of these creatures! At one point, I was about 1 foot away from the tail of a manta ray, and at that distance, one can truly see that Steve Irwin's accident truly was a freakish thing!

There are coral reefs set up, and even some "artifacts", such as sunken war planes etc., sitting on these reefs. Anything that you might find diving on the reefs of Guam is here to see! There are a few "touch ponds" as well for the kids!

They close at 8:30 pm, and reopen at 9 pm with a bar and cocktail lounge setup inside the tunnel. You can see the tables folded against the tunnel walls when you are touring. This would be an EXCELLENT PLACE to take someone for a romantic evening or a proposal! :-)

They also conduct dives, and sometimes "sleepovers" for children in the tunnel as well!

THIS IS A MUST SEE, so budget accordingly! Each activity is priced separately, so one can pick and choose activities to make it more affordable.

Check with the friendly Guam Visitor's Bureau for brochures and more information!
