Two Lover's Point & Japanese Peace Memorial

I hope I got those names correct in the title! Yesterday, 4/4, we went to visit two sites, the Two Lover's Point and WWII Japanese War/Peace Memorial and Monument.

Both were interesting.

The WWII site was on a big hill, and was the final, "dug-in" spot for the Japanese Army, and when the U.S. Marine's captured this hill, the "battle for Guam" was over, and Guam was once again a U.S. possession and the Chamorros' were freed from two years of Japanese slavery! Guam was VERY strategic for WWII, due to its proximity to Japan.

Anyhow, the Japanese dead from this hillside battle are buried under the white monument, which represents praying hands. We got to visit some of the "caves" where they set up their command post and "dug in" until death. And we got to see a few archaeological items that were dug out of the caves at a later date.

Two Lover's Point is reputed to be a place where a Chamorro couple, about to be separated by an arranged marriage, jumped to their deaths after the Spanish/American war (which is when we first acquired Guam.) It is a beautiful view, definately a "big jump" to the rocks below, AND is now a favorite Japanese tourist wedding spot! We even got to see a wedding party arrive!
We will post more in a few days! It may be difficult over the Easter Holiday! Happy Easter everyone!
